Since opening in 1970, the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at Montefiore Einstein has pursued a threefold mission of providing the best quality care to patients, conducting research to advance the field of otorhinolaryngology and training the next generation of specialists.  Our national reputation for excellence was recently acknowledged by U.S. News & World Report, which ranked Montefiore Einstein’s performance in the specialty of Ear, Nose and Throat as “high-performing.”  Marvin P. Fried, MD, an award winning otolaryngologist, has led the Department since 1999 and is a recognized pioneer in rhinology and laryngology.

Our Services

We are currently expanding our services and continuing to cultivate our subspecialties within otorhinolaryngology.  Within the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery are several divisions led by renowned physicians who have pioneered treatments and elevated the standards of care for adults and children with otorhinolaryngological disorders. Divisions include:

Division of Head and Neck Surgery

Our department provides individualized care for patients with head and neck cancer. Our specialists take a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, working closely with radiation and medical oncologists, oral and plastic surgeons, speech-swallow pathologists, nutritionists and other physicians. Learn more about the Division of Head and Neck Surgery.

Division of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology

We provide treatment for all pediatric ear, nose and throat illnesses and post-procedure care, including:

  • Hearing loss
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Major airway surgery
  • Tracheotomy
  • Voice and sinus ailments

Division of Otology and Neurotology

We have an outstanding team of physicians and audiologists for the treatment of otologic and skull base disorders. We offer testing for the following conditions, among others:

  • Acoustic neuromas
  • Acute and chronic ear problems
  • Facial nerve problems
  • Hearing loss
  • Ménière's disease
  • Skull base tumors for all age groups

Division of Facial Plastic & Reconstruction

Our surgeons are skilled in a range of reconstructive procedures that both restore function and improve appearance, including reconstructive rhinoplasty facial reconstruction after Mohs surgery or following ablative surgery for cancer, treatment for facial nerve disorders including facial nerve reanimation, and correction of prominent ears in children and adults (Oooplasty). Division of Rhinology, Nasal and Sinus Diseases and Surgery

Specialized treatment is provided for patients suffering from nasal and sinus diseases and complications, including:

  • Acute and chronic sinusitis and its complications
  • Nasal polyps and allergy
  • Neoplastic disease
  • Reconstructive problems
  • Septal deformities and other problems leading to nasal airway obstruction
  • Sinus surgery after prior unsuccessful therapy

Division of Sleep Medicine and Surgery

Our approach to treating patients with sleep disorders is integrative, combining all treatment modalities, including Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) masks, oral appliances, and surgery. We collaborate with other sleep physicians at Montefiore Einstein, as well as with dentists, neurologists, pulmonologists and pediatricians to ensure comprehensive care. Division of Laryngology and Voice Disorders

We provide medical and surgical solutions for patients with hoarseness and vocal problems. Our experienced laryngologists use advanced videostroboscopy for voice assessment to assist in patient diagnosis and treatment. Often patients with voice complaints require consultation with physicians specializing in neurology, gastroenterology and other disciplines.
