Yeshiva University Honors Montefiore President

Spencer Foreman, MD, Receives Honorary Doctor of Science Degree

Citing him as a man who "shaped destiny" and whose life is "a living legacy," the President of Yeshiva University, Richard Joel, bestowed an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree on long-time Montefiore Medical Center President, Spencer Foreman, MD, in Convocation Ceremonies held at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore.

Joel called Dr. Foreman's leadership "a beacon of light for the people of the Bronx and beyond, " focusing on the community and the primacy of the patient being of the utmost importance.  "You are a man who not only believes in tomorrow, but builds tomorrow," Joel said as he presented the honorary degree to Dr. Foreman amidst a gathering of top Yeshiva and Montefiore Trustees, administrators and clinicians.

Dr. Foreman said it was a "singular honor" to receive such recognition from Yeshiva and its medical school, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He said the medical school, with its outstanding research, and the medical center, with its world-class clinical care, have forged a relationship over the years that serves to benefit not only medical students but Montefiore's patients as well.  He also quipped, "It's usually taken me four years to receive an academic degree; this one took my entire 21-year tenure at Montefiore."

"For more than two decades, Spencer Foreman has touched and transformed this institution and, as a result of his visionary leadership, this institution has touched and transformed the children, families and communities to whom it has been devoted," said David A. Tanner, Chairman, Board of Trustees, Montefiore Medical Center.

"The Spencer Foreman era has produced nothing short of a twenty-first century medical marvel:  a financially strong, technologically-advanced provider of world-class medicine with an unyielding commitment to those most vulnerable in our society," Tanner said, "A distinguished legacy indeed."

Dr. Foreman has announced he would be retiring as President at the end of this year.
