President of Montefiore Wins Prestigious Innovators Award

At a ceremony in Washington, DC., the American Hospital Association (AHA) presented the Justin Ford Kimball Innovators Award to Spencer Foreman, M.D., president of Montefiore Medical Center.  The annual award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions in healthcare delivery and financing.

"The hallmark of Dr. Foreman's career as a physician and executive has been his innate understanding of a hospital's deeper role in its community," said AHA President Dick Davidson.  "The organizations he has led not only have excelled at their mission of medical care; they have been leaders at changing and bettering the lives of the people in the communities around them.  Many leaders work within the limitations of what they can accomplish.  Dr. Foreman is driven by the possibilities."

Under Dr. Foreman's leadership, Montefiore has created one of the nation's largest community health systems to serve the 1.4 million people of the Bronx and beyond.

Montefiore is one of the largest academic medical centers in the country and is the university hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  A regional integrated delivery system, Montefiore operates two general hospitals and a children's hospital with 1,050 beds, ambulatory care centers at 35 locations, a rehabilitation center and the oldest hospital-based home care program in the country.

The medical center's ambulatory care system sees over 2,000,000 visits per year, including 200,000 emergencies, and its hospitals discharge 65,000 patients per year. A community development arm of the medical center rehabilitates apartment houses and commercial buildings, creates condominium and co-operative housing, publishes a community newspaper, sponsors a business improvement district and removes graffiti from 20 square blocks.

Dr. Foreman graduated from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Penn., and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and is certified in internal medicine and pulmonary disease.  He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine.  He is professor of medicine and professor of epidemiology and community health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

A past chairman of the Association of American Medical Colleges and a current member of its executive council, Dr. Foreman has served as a member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education.  He is a past member of the boards of trustees of the American Hospital Association and the Hospital Association of New York State and a member and past chairman of the Board of Governors of the Greater New York Hospital Association and the Board of Directors of the League of Voluntary Hospitals. He is chairman of the board of the Biomedical Research Alliance of New York. He served as a member of the U.S. Prospective Payment Assessment Commission.  Before coming to Montefiore in 1986 he was president of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. He is a member of the Board of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and Chairman of the Board of Ursinus College.

The AHA is a not-for-profit association of healthcare provider organizations and individuals committed to the health improvement of their communities.
