Montefiore has developed one of the finest nursing staffs of any major medical center in the country. We are guided by a service philosophy and an approach to training and promotion that produces highly competent, compassionate nurses who provide top-quality care.
Our nurses have an average of 13 years of experience at Montefiore, and 16 years experience in nursing overall. Our yearly turnover rate for nurses is only 3.7 percent, a very low rate for a large medical center like Montefiore and a measure of the commitment of our nursing staff. All of those statistics point to high job satisfaction—and studies show that nurses who feel supported and are happy where they work provide better care for their patients.
Montefiore's nursing staff is highly educated, with 95 percent of our registered nurses holding bachelor degrees. And we don’t stop there - education is ongoing for our nurses. We conduct regular seminars, to ensure our staff is skilled in the latest treatment procedures and equipment. Our training programs combine classes with on-the-job assessments, to ensure that every nurse can competently apply new knowledge in real patient care.
Montefiore has a history of developing and promoting nursing supervisors from among our staff nurses. In doing so, we create nurse leaders who are both managers and mentors of their nursing teams. Our Nurse Leadership Training is another way that we invest in the professional growth of our nurses and ensure consistent quality care for patients.
Nowhere is Montefiore’s attention to service and sensitivity to patient and family needs more apparent than in the day-to-day actions and attitudes of our nurses. We recognize the diversity of our patients and reflect it in the ranks of our nursing staff. We work to make the care experience one that respects a patient’s background and beliefs. We understand the necessity of involving family members in decision-making at every level. More than ever today, our nurses are advocates for our patients in numerous ways.
