Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care

Urological Oncology

The Department of Urology at Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care offers patients a full range of methods, techniques and skills to help fight urologic cancers, including those of the prostate, bladder, kidney and testes. Under the guidance of outstanding, compassionate leadership, our Department's skilled surgeons develop and adopt the most recent and best surgical and medical therapies available.

Our focus is improving and preserving the health and lives of our patients through concentrated, exceptional care. We work closely with the departments of medical oncology and surgical oncology to ensure our patients receive the full benefit of MontefioreÂ’s vast expertise in all facets of urological oncology. We determine an individualized course of care for each patient, which may involve radiation, medication or surgery, or a combination thereof. Montefiore offers outstanding treatment in all of these areas.

The Benefits of Robotic Assisted Prostate Surgery

For cases that demand more severe intervention, such as malignancies of the prostate, Montefiore offers both radical prostatectomy and a new sophisticated robotic surgery.

For the patient, a robotic assisted procedure can offer all the potential benefits of a minimally invasive procedure, including less pain, less blood loss and less need for blood transfusions. Even more important is the robot's record in preserving erectile function and urinary continence after prostate surgery. Moreover, robotic surgeery can enable a shorter hospital stay, a quicker recovery and faster return to normal daily activities.

For more information on robotic assisted prostate surgery and how to schedule an appointment with Dr. Reza Ghavamian, Director of Urologic Oncology, visit Robotic Prostate Surgery.

Advances in kidney & bladder cancer

Our expertise extends to innovative nephron-sparing surgery — removal of cancer by minimally invasive means, while preserving the kidney — to treat renal (kidney) cancer. This method is appropriate for many early stage kidney cancer patients and research indicates that it is as effective as removing the entire kidney.

In treating bladder cancer, Montefiore uses the most up-to-date surgical approaches. Notably, we use bowel segments to create neo-bladders to help patients retain the ability to urinate through the penis or urethra — avoiding the inconvenience of an external bag for urination.

Our advanced surgical treatments also include minimally invasive methods for testicular and penile cancers, as well as lymph node dissection.

At Montefiore, the Department of Urology explores the latest methods to provide our patients with the best, least invasive and most effective means for battling urological cancer.
