Physician Assistant Program at Montefiore

Size and Growth

The Attending Service at Montefiore Medical Center is a physician assistant (PA)-managed
medical service that cares for an average of 170 medicine and cardiac inpatients. The Attending Service is the largest and fastest growing service at Montefiore. Our team of more than 70 PAs is well trained and enthusiastic and cares for adult patients with a wide range of illnesses and disease acuity.

Autonomy

Working as valued members of a patient’s healthcare team, PAs take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests, prescribe medications and more. PAs play a vital role in patient care at Montefiore.

Supportive Environment

The PAs on Montefiore’s Attending Service are well supported by the medical leadership as well as senior PAs who are present 24/7. Critical Care Department staff respond to emergencies within 15 minutes or less, 24 hours a day. In addition, Montefiore has a complete spectrum of medicine subspecialties available to consult and advise on patient care.

Education

Continuing education for physician assistants is a major priority of the Attending Service. Sessions are conducted twice weekly by distinguished members of the Montefiore faculty. New PAs are given intense training before taking on clinical responsibilities. In addition, all PAs have an opportunity to take the Fundamentals of Critical Care Support course offered by the Critical Care Medicine department. We believe that continuing to educate our PAs helps provide the best, most up-to-date care for our patients.
