Arnold Melman M.D., Professor and Chairman
Dr. Arnold Melman is the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology. Dr. Melman is a 1966 graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He did his internship and assistant residency in surgery in that institution’s Strong Memorial Hospital. In 1968 to 1970 he was a clinical fellow in Urology in the NICHD’s Gerontology Research Center. Dr. Melman did his Urology training at UCLA from 1970 to 1974. He has been an assistant and associate Professor of Urology at the Indiana University School of Medicine and Chief of Urology at Indiana University School of Medicine and Chief of Urology at the Indianapolis VA Hospital. After returning to New York City in 1979, he became Professor of Urology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and in 1986 Chief of Urology at the Beth Israel Medical Center. He assumed his present role as Chairman of the Department of Urology in 1988. He is a busy clinical surgeon with an interest in Radical Perineal Prostatectomy, Reconstructive Surgery, Microvascular Surgery. He has a subspecialty interest in basic research and the diagnosis and treatment of male sexual dysfunction. Under his direction, numerous basic research projects are being conducted at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Urological Research Laboratory. Dr. Melman has published more than 150 scientific articles and book chapters.
In 1997 Dr. Melman was the president for the Society for the Study of Impotence. He’s the Principal Investigator on an NIH grant designed to evaluate basic mechanisms of erectile physiology and was co-editor of the International Journal of Impotence Research. Dr. Melman is the past chairman of the FDA’s Gastroenterology and Urology devices panel and is currently a voting member of the panel. He has been a reviewer at the National Institute of Health’s Study Section for Urology grants for the past two years. Dr. Melman is the Principal Investigator on several clinical trials of new medications and treatment modalities. He has been granted patents on several new urologoical devices. Dr. Melman is a co-developer of the use of gene transfer for the therapy of smooth muscle diseases of the genito urinary systems.
Reza Ghavamian M.D., Associate Professor
Dr. Reza Ghavamian completed his undergraduate and medical studies at Boston University and trained in Urology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Mass. During his training, he spent a year at The Great Ormand Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, UK under the tutelage of Mr. Philip Ransley. After completing his residency, Dr. Ghavamian completed the Urologic Oncology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN where his main interest was prostate and renal cancer. He has authored or co-authored several articles and book chapters in the field of urological oncology.
Dr. Ghavamian's area of expertise is Urologic Oncology. He is the director of Urologic Oncology in the department of Urology. His main interest is the application of the most recent minimally invasive technology to the treatment of urologic cancers. These include laparoscopic renal surgery including laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, radical nephrectomy and laparoscopic nephroureterectomy.
Dr. Ghavamian has one of the region’s largest experience in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. This procedure was first performed in May of 2001 at Montefiore and is now the preferred surgical approach for the treatment of prostate cancer at Montefiore.

David M. Hoenig M.D., Associate Professor
Dr. David M. Hoenig joined the Department of Urology in March, 1999. He graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine in 1991 and trained in general surgery and urology at Brown University in Providence, R.I. He completed a clinical fellowship in endourology under Dr. Ralph Clayman at Washington University in St. Louis where he became proficient in advanced laparoscopic and endosurgical techniques. Following his fellowship, Dr. Hoenig spent 18 months as a Clinical Instructor in the Division of Urology at Allegheny University in Philadelphia,PA.
Dr. Hoenig's areas of expertise include all phases of renal stone disease (both surgical and medical management), and laparoscopic kidney surgery. His research and new clinical interests are in renal stone disease and the development of new laparoscopic surgical techniques to make a wider array of minimally invasive surgery available to patients.
Norman Z. Kahan M.D., Assistant Professor
Norman Kahan, MD has been engaged in the practice of general urology since 1973 at the Monefiore Medical Center. Dr. Kahan received his medical degree at the New York University School of Medicine in 1966. After completing an internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York in 1968, he served in the US Army Medical Corps as a surgeon from 1968-1970. Dr. Kahan returned to the states to complete his residency training in Urology at the Montefiore Medical Center. In 1973 he became a full time member of the department and over the past 25 years Dr. Kahan has played a major role in the success of the urology department.
Although Dr. Kahan treats a broad spectrum of urologic conditions, he specializes in the care and treatment of men with prostate cancer, and for the last five years has treated patients with brachytheraphy, a particular form of radiation therphy which involves inserting tiny, radioactive seeds into the prostate. This obviates the need for radical surgery and its attendent morbidity. In conjunction with the Radiation Oncology Department, Dr. Kahan was instrumental in establishing the prostate brachytherapy program at the medical center. Thus far the joint effort has resulted in more than 250 implants. Dr. Kahan was involved with establishing an active program here in cryo-surgical ablation of the prostate. Dr. Kahan is a also an active member of several national committees that are involved in establishing standards of appropriate care, treatment and quality assurance for patients receiving brachtherapy.
Stanley J. Kogan M.D., Assistant Professor
Stanley J. Kogan is Clinical Professor of Urology and Director of pediatric urology at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore. He attended Dartmouth College and then graduated from the State University of New York Medical School at Syracuse in 1966. His internship, surgical residency and urological surgical residency were at Montefiore. His pediatric urological training was undertaken in England, first at the Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool and subsequently at the Hospital for Sick Children in London. Dr. Kogan returned to New York in 1974 and initiated his pediatric urological practice at that time at Montefiore.
Since that time the practice has expanded regionally with outreach offices and referrals from the counties surrounding the New York metropolitan area. A strong clinical practice has been the basis for this growth and for Dr. Kogan's academic pursuits. He has published extensively in journals and textbooks regarding his interests in cryptorchidism, disorders of sexual development and reconstructive pediatric urology. He has also lectured nationally and internationally in these areas. Dr. Kogan has served as the liaison person between the American Academy of Pediatrics and the U. S. Food and Drug Administration regarding the issue of testicular prosthetic devices. He presently is the medical director for an ongoing study of testicular devices in children. He has been a member of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Urology Section and has served on the Editorial board of the pediatric section of the Journal of Urology. Dr. Kogan continues to have clinical and laboratory research interests involving testicular disorders in children, environmental aspects of reproductive health in children, reconstructive pediatric urology and innovative techniques in minimally invasive surgery in children.
Lloyd S. Minsky M.D., Assistant Professor
Dr. Minsky is an attending physician in the Department of Urology at Montefiore and an assistant professor of Urology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
After receiving his medical degree from the State University of New York, Health Science Center at Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Minsky completed his residency program in Urology at Montefiore and Albert Einstein and served as chief resident in urology.
Dr. Minsky is a board certified urologist with specialized training in prostate brachytherapy, thermotherapy and laser applications in urology. He has several publications to his credit and has presented at local, regional and national meetings.
