Breakthroughs in prostate treatment
Montefiore is the only facility in the New York area treating benign hypertrophic prostrate (BHP) — non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland — with breakthrough microwave technology.

This revolutionary method, called transurethral microwave therapy (TUMT), is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the insertion of an instrument into the prostate through the urethra. The instrument acts as an antenna and conducts microwaves to apply controlled heat to the inside of the prostate, while fluid circulates around the antenna and protects the urethra. It is faster, less painful and more convenient for patients than any previous treatment for BHP.

For cases that demand more severe intervention, such as malignancies of the prostate, Montefiore offers both radical prostatectomy and a new sophisticated robotic surgery.

Experts in Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction affects as many as 30 million men in the United States. Its causes are wide and varied, and can be related to diabetes, cancer treatment and chronic disease. Montefiore is a leader in studying erectile dysfunction. We specialize in penile implant surgery, using the latest technology available to help our patients restore sexual function.

Expert treatment for kidney disease & stones
The Department's urological surgeons are expert at performing both partial and radical kidney operations, or nephrectomies, on patients with diseased organs. Partial nephrectomy uses minimally invasive techniques to remove only the tumor and leave the rest of the kidney intact. In the case of more serious disease or malignancy, we perform radical nephrectomy to take out the kidney entirely.

We excel at the removal of kidney stones, the most common problem of the urinary tract. Our percutaneous stone removal method involves extracting stones through a tube fed directly into the kidney via a small incision in the patient's back.
