Department of Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology at Montefiore Medical Center, The University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, provides tertiary care to patients with diseases of the Eye. The Department also provides extensive teaching and research in all of the affiliated hospitals and medical settings. These include the Kennedy Center for Research, the Henkind Eye Institute, the College Eye Institute and the Montefiore Laser and Eye Center. Research activities in five important areas have been supported by Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. These research projects are in the areas of information transfers between retinal cells, light transductions, resistance to retinal ischemia, cateractogenesis and antibiotic pharmacokinetics.

Highly Specialized Faculty

The Department's faculty includes highly specialized physicians as well as optometrists and orthoptists. Aside from general ophthalmological services for adults and pediatrics, the department offers specialty clinical services in neuro-ophthalmology, retina, cornea, and glaucoma.

The Henkind Eye Institute

The Henkind Eye Institute is located in the Green Medical Arts Pavilion at 3400 Bainbridge Avenue. State-of-the-art technology is available for the treatment in diseases of the eye, and clinical services for both adults and pediatrics are offered. In addition to the Neuro-ophthalmology, Retina, Cornea, and Glaucoma Clinics, low vision and contact lens services are also offered.
