Physicians and Faculty

Irwin R. Merkatz, MD, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, has served as Chairman since 1982.

Dr. Merkatz graduated from Cornell University and Cornell University Medical College. His internship was at the New York Hospital, and his residency training at The New York Lying-In Hospital. Dr. Merkatz has published over 125 articles, including the seminal research on the use of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein screening for detection of risk for Down syndrome, and his expertise in multiple arenas spans regionalization of perinatal care, care of the diabetic pregnant woman, the use of uniform record keeping in the provision of comprehensive perinatal care, and preconceptional health.

His distinguished career has included appointment as Scholar in Residence at the Institute of Medicine, Special Advisor for Infant Mortality for the National Institute of Child Health Development, membership on the United States Public Health Service’s Expert Panel on the Content of Prenatal Care, and being chosen to serve as a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellow with the United States House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means.

Dr. Merkatz is a fellow in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a member of many professional societies, including the The New York Obstetrical Society, the Perinatal Research Society, the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, the American Fertility Society, and the Society of Perinatal Obstetricians.
