Pioneers in cardiothoracic surgery

Montefiore-Einstein began a distinguished 50-year history of achievement in cardiac care on May 2, 1960 when Robert H. Goetz, M.D., performed the first successful coronary artery bypass operation in the world. Montefiore-Einstein has remained at the forefront of cardiothoracic medicine and our current pioneering work has been recognized by ABC World News Tonight, the New England Journal of Medicine and the National Proceedings of the Academy of Science. In addition, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recognized the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery with the highly coveted and competitive multimillion dollar clinical research award NHLBI UO1 Cardiothoracic Surgery Network.

The Montefiore-Einstein Heart Center is at the frontlines of cutting edge technology through clinical trials. Currently the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is conducting clinical trials in:

The Montefiore-Einstein Heart Center's position as a leader in cardiothoracic surgery is nationally recognized: today's students compete for residency positions. Patients can take comfort knowing that the heart experts of tomorrow are learning from the Montefiore-Einstein surgeons today.

Leaders in minimally invasive care

Because the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Montefiore-Einstein Heart Center are committed to restoring patients to active lives quickly, we take pride in our position as a national leader in minimally invasive care; such care uses small incisions to reduce pain and foster rapid recovery time. In fact, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery Chairman Robert E. Michler, MD was among the first surgeons in the United States to perform minimally invasive and robotic heart surgery.

In addition, Dr. Joseph Derose, an internationally renowned surgeon, joined this team as Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Heart Surgery.

Because of their commitment to minimally invasive surgery, at the Montefiore-Einstein Heart Center many complex heart surgeries can often be accomplished with smaller incisions.
